NANOTEC joins five universities to study nano-cosmeceuticals made from Thai herbs

The National Nanotechnology Center (NANOTEC) is joining five leading Thai universities to create innovation in the research and development of cosmetics products made from native Thai herbs. This will add value to the Thai herbal cosmeceuticals industry, raise production standards and create new opportunities for Thailand as one of the leaders in Asia as cosmetics exporter. At present Thailand is the fourth largest exporter of cosmetics products after Singapore, China and Japan.

NANOTEC has signed an agreement with Chulalongkorn University, University of Khon Kaen, University of Chiang Mai, Mahidol University, and Naresuan University to establish the Thai Herbal Nano-cosmeceuticals Coordinated Research Program, aimed at using nano-encapsulation technology and nano-materials technology to make the addition of herbs in cosmetics products more efficient. New technologies can make sure that the active ingredients in herbs deliver more real beneficial effects. The Program will focus on herbs that have skin whitening, anti-aging and anti-oxidants qualities.

The research program will cover all steps of the process from developing raw materials to extraction methods, testing the effectiveness and safety of products, and transferring the technology on a commercial scale. The research program runs from 2008-2010. It is expected to result in the development of more than ten new herbal products, which will later create new innovations, add value to Thai herbal products, raise the production standards of Thai herbal cosmetics products and enable private sector companies to build on the research on an industrial scale.

In addition to this joint research program with five universities, NANOTEC is also working on other herbal nano-cosmeceutical research projects with other public and private research institutes including the National Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology Center (BIOTEC), the Medical Science Department, the Government Pharmaceutical Organization, the Department for Development of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine and Chophaya Abhaibhubejhr Hospital.
