| New BIOTEC Executive Director appointed | | | |
The National Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (BIOTEC) announces today the appointment of Dr. Kanyawim Kirtikara as the new BIOTEC Executive Director replacing Prof. Dr. Morakot Tanticharoen who completed an eight year term.
Dr. Kanyawim joined BIOTEC in 1998 as a researcher at BIOTEC bioassay laboratory. She rose to become Director of BIOTEC Central Research Unit in 2005 and Deputy Director of BIOTEC in charge of capacity building in late 2007.
Dr. Kanyawim completed her Ph.D. in Genetics from the University of Connecticut in the United States. Following the completion of her Ph.D., she began a postdoctoral research fellowship at Rutgers University in the Department of Plant Sciences and obtained a second postdoctoral fellowship at the Department of Medicine, University of Tennessee focusing on complex regulations of genes involved in prostaglandin synthesis. She joined BIOTEC upon returning from the US in 1998. Despite her administrative responsibility, Dr. Kanyawim continues to be engaged in research, focusing on prostaglandin biosynthesis in both mammalian and invertebrate models, and to publish both research and reviews papers. She is also actively involved in research investigating natural products from microorganisms found in Thailand. Dr. Kanyawim is presently a member and part of the secretariat team of The Thai Academy of Science and Technology (TAST).
In announcing the appointment, Dr. Sakarindr Bhumiratana, President of National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA), said "We are delighted to bring on board Dr. Kanyawim as she brings enormous experience and understanding of the importance of biotechnology to national advancement. I am sure Dr. Kanyawim and her BIOTEC colleagues will continue to make a strong contribution to the overall NSTDA core value of Nation First, Science & Technology Excellence, Teamwork, Deliverability, and Accountability."
