ASEAN-India Workshop

ASEAN-India Workshop on R&D and Innovation Management on 12-13 January 2009 at Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Bangalore, India

The ASEAN-India workshop was arranged under the initiative of the Sub-Committee on Science and Technology Infrastructure and Resources Development (SCIRD). The main objective was to develop cooperative network among ASEAN countries and India for the best practice in R&D and innovation.

There were about 20 representatives from 10 countries (Cambodia, Indonesia, LAO PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, and India) attending the workshop. Currently there are two funds (ASEAN-India fund and ASEAN-India S&T fund) available for the activities arranged for the innovation and commercialization of R&D.

Two representatives from Thailand (Dr. Kitipong Promwong and Dr. Nataporn Chanvarasuth) joined the workshop to present country report entitled “The Science, Technology and Innovation Policy and Strategy” In addition to the policy & strategy, the biotechnology development in Thailand was presented along with the success cases of public & private partnership. The benefit from the workshop included not only knowing the information about S&T policies and strategies of other countries, but also learning some experiences from experts. There were several talks related to R&D and innovation management, entrepreneurship, and role of IPR & innovation commercialization.

The future plan is to identify the needs related to technology management of each country. The activities such as workshop and seminar will be arranged in the topics that most countries mention as priority needs. In the workshop, there were several ideas set from the previous SCIRD meeting. The examples include the following:
1. Human Resource Development on Innovation and R&D management: led by Philippines
2. Development of ASEAN-India S&T Innovation indicator: led by Thailand
3. Policy Studies in the area of IP management, Technology forecasting, Technology transfer, etc.
